Lumen is not your school of record.

Parents ask, reasonably, whether Lumen can be the school. It cannot. Not today. An umbrella school enrolls a child, keeps attendance, and in some places stands in for the compulsory year. Lumen rewrites a lecture into lessons, prints them, and writes down what the child finished. Those are different jobs. We will not blur them to win a search ranking.

The certificate says completed the work. The transcript lists lessons they actually finished. We do not put a borrowed seal on the paper. We do not claim accreditation. If a district asks what you are doing, the honest answer is: a curriculum layer at the kitchen table, not a private school.

Why the confusion exists

The confusion exists because the market taught parents to look for a school-shaped object. A logo. A transcript. A promise that someone else is the adult of record. We have a logo. We have a list of completed work. We will not take the third thing. The adult of record is you, or a school you actually enrolled in.

Online programs that call themselves schools have lawyers, a state, a person who can be served papers, and a duty that does not end when the wifi does. That is expensive and serious. We will not wear the costume of that duty. Costumes are how families get surprised in an audit.

If we ever become a cover school, it will be a second product with a state, a lawyer, and a person who can be served papers. Until then, use us for the lesson. Keep your state’s homeschool notice, if you need one, in your own name.

What you can say

You can say the child is using a curriculum that rewrites university lectures into printable sittings, with a bar, with spaced returns. You can say MIT OpenCourseWare remains free and credited. You can say other courses are assembled from books and talks we had the right to adapt. You can show the print pack and the certificate.

You cannot say the child is enrolled at the Institute. You cannot say Lumen is accredited. You cannot say the certificate is a diploma. You cannot say we keep attendance. We do not know if they were at the table. You do.

Worldschoolers, tutors, and microschools already live in this gap. They are not waiting for us to become a district. They need a lesson that travels. That is the job we took. The job we did not take is standing in for the law.

The line on the paper

Completed the work. That is a true sentence when it is true. It is not “graduated.” It is not “promoted.” It is not “credit hours.” If your umbrella school wants to translate our list into their units, that translation is theirs. We will not print their units as if they were ours.

Lumen is not your school of record. A certificate records completed work. It is not a diploma. Keep those three sentences close. They will save you an argument with a relative, a counselor, and, if it comes to it, a clerk. We would rather lose the search ranking than win it with a costume.

Use us for the sitting, the still, the return, the pack. Be the school, or enroll in one. Do not ask a teaching studio to pretend. Pretending is easy to print. It is hard to unwind.

What we will help you say to a clerk

If a clerk asks whether the child is enrolled somewhere, the answer is whatever is true in your state: homeschool in your name, or an umbrella you actually joined, or a school you actually pay. Lumen is not in that sentence. If they ask what curriculum you use, then we can be in the sentence: a curriculum layer, printable sittings, university ideas at an age, a bar, spaced returns.

If they ask whether we are accredited, no. If they ask whether the certificate is a diploma, no. If they ask whether OpenCourseWare means the child is an Institute student, no. Those nos are not a failure of the product. They are the product being unwilling to lie.

Umbrella schools, where they exist, are a different machine. Some states make them easy. Some make them a lawyer. We will not pretend a teaching studio is that machine because a marketing blog said “become a school.” Becoming a school is a duty to children you have not met. We meet them through you, at a table we do not see.

Worldschoolers already explain this at borders and at kitchen tables abroad. The pack is easier to explain than a login. Paper looks like work because it is work. Bring the pack. Bring the list of completed work. Do not bring a speech about accreditation we do not have.

If we ever take the duty, it will have a state on the letterhead, a human who can be served, and a second product name if we have to, so the teaching studio and the school cannot be confused on a fridge. Until then, the fridge sheet says completed the work. You are the school of record, or someone you can name is.

Lumen is not your school of record. Keep using us anyway, for the sitting and the still and the return. That is a coherent life. A costume would be easier to sell. We are not for sale as a costume.

Relatives

Relatives are how this confusion becomes a fight at a holiday. They want a school name. Give them the sentence: we are the school of record, or [umbrella] is, and Lumen is the curriculum on the table. Then pass the potatoes. If they want a seal, show the certificate and read the line. Completed the work. Then the potatoes again.

If they say the child is “doing MIT,” correct them. The child is doing an idea from a lecture that is free, or from a book we may adapt. Credit. Do not let a holiday become a rumor that enrolls a child in a place they do not attend. Rumors are mean to the child when a counselor later says no.

If they offer to pay for a “real school,” you may take the money for paper and a household year on Bring, or you may not. You may not spend it on a lock in front of OpenCourseWare, because we will not sell you one.

Clerks are easier than relatives if you are brief. Curriculum layer. Not enrolled here. Homeschool notice in our name, or umbrella X. Certificate is not a diploma. Then stop talking. Extra talk is how costumes get born.

We will not add a mode called “school” that changes the certificate. That mode would be a lie with a toggle. Toggles are not duties. Duties have states and lawyers.

Be the school, or name the school. Use us for the lesson. That is a complete answer. It is allowed to be complete and still not be a campus.
