A transcript of completed work, not a school transcript

A high-school parent asks for a transcript. They mean the document that lists courses, dates, and sometimes a grade. We can list what the child actually finished in Lumen: the lecture series, the day, whether the last check was first-try. We will not turn that into a 4.0 and a school name that implies we sat in for your state.

Homeschoolers already have a way to present their year. Our paper is evidence of work, with distinction only when it is true. Print it with the certificates. Keep your own records for the law you live under. If a college asks what Lumen is, send them the Why page. We are a teaching studio. We are not the registrar.

What we will put on the page

The name of the child. The work they finished, nested: a class, then the lecture series under it, or a sitting if that is all they did. The day they finished. Whether the last check was first-try, which is the only meaning of with distinction here. Done-only, if you want a short list instead of a museum of attempts.

We will not invent a GPA. We will not map a sitting to a Carnegie unit unless a school of record you already have has asked for that mapping, in their language, on their paper. We will not put a university course code on the sheet as if the child were enrolled there.

Colleges that know how to read a homeschool file are looking for an honest list, a parent’s letter, and sometimes a syllabus. We can supply the list of completed work and a sentence about what a sitting is. We cannot supply the letter. That letter is yours. It should be. You were in the room.

What the paper is not

It is not a school transcript in the sense a registrar means. It is not accredited. It is not a promise that a state will accept it as the compulsory year. It is not a secret back door into a university. If anyone sells you that story, they are selling you a story.

It is also not a scrape of every click. We will not print a heatmap of engagement. We will not give you a “learning analytics” annex. Completed work is a bar. Time-on-platform is not.

If they started a series and left, the transcript does not have to pretend they finished. Honesty is the whole value of the sheet. A padded list teaches a household to lie in a format that looks official. We will not help with that.

How to use it

Export when you need it, not every Friday. Pair it with the certificates if you like ceremony. Pair it with your own log if your state wants hours. Pair it with nothing if you only wanted to remember the year.

If a counselor asks whether Lumen is honors, the honest answer is: it is university ideas asked at an age, with a bar, with returns. Honors is their word. Completed the work is ours. With distinction means first try on the last check, not a ranking.

Who it is for

It is for you, first, so the year is visible when the tabs are closed. It is for a counselor who asked what the child actually did. It is for an umbrella school you already belong to, if they want a list they can translate. It is not for a stranger on the internet who wants to rank your house.

Done-only is the merciful export. Attempts are your business. A college does not need the sitting they left on a ferry. They need the work that met the bar. If you want the longer list for yourself, keep it. Do not confuse the two piles in an envelope.

With distinction on a transcript means the same as on a certificate: first try on the last check. If a counselor maps that to honors, that mapping is theirs. We will not print honors. Honors is a school word. We are not a school.

If they finished a class, the series nest under it. If they finished a series, it stands. If they finished a sitting, it can stand alone without pretending to be a year. Honesty scales down. Padding scales up. We only scale down.

Keep your own hours if your state wants hours. We do not watch the clock. We watch the bar. A child who met the bar in two evenings and a child who met it in ten can share a line on the sheet. The line is the work, not the suffering.

A transcript of completed work. If those four words ever gain a school name, a GPA, or a borrowed course code, someone has dressed us. Undress us. The list should be able to stand in a kitchen without a costume.

What to put in the envelope

If a counselor asked, put: the list of completed work, done-only; a copy of the Why page or this letter; your own letter about the year; the print pack for one sitting if they want to see what a sitting is. Do not put a costume GPA. Do not put a borrowed course code. Do not put a heatmap.

If an umbrella school asked, put the same list and let them translate. Translation is their job. If they want hours, your log of hours is your job. We did not sit with a clock.

If nobody asked, you may still export once in June for the binder. June is a good time to see whether the year was bars or tabs. If the list is short and true, that is a year with a high bar. If the list is long and you do not remember the stills, the bar may have been a click. Fix the bar, not the length.

Distinction is rare if the last check is real. If every line says with distinction, the last check is too kind or the child is extraordinary. Extraordinary is allowed. Too kind is a bug. Tell us if every child in a house is distinguished on every sitting. We will look at the check.

Do not send the envelope to a university admissions office as if it were an official transcript from a school. Send it as what it is, if they asked for curriculum evidence. Honesty is more useful to them than a costume they will detect in a page.

Completed work, nested under the class when there is a class, dated, stingy with distinction. That is the transcript. It is not a school transcript. Keep the not in the title so the envelope cannot lie even if the rest of the year wants to.
